Laramie is a small college town of about 32,000 people (as of the most recent estimate), situated on a high plain between the Laramie Mountains to the east, and the Snowy Range Mountains to the west. The Laramie River runs directly through town, dividing "main" Laramie from what is known as 'West Laramie". Laramie is a major stop on the Interstate 80 corridor, just 45 minutes or so from the state capital of Cheyenne and under an hour from Ft. Collins, Colorado. Denver, CO and Casper, WY are just a couple of hours away.
We have typically bitterly cold, windy, and dry winters, with subzero temperatures not uncommon. Spring is much wetter, unpredictable, and often brings heavy snows. Laramie routinely gets closed in during winter and spring snow events due to low visibility, drifting/blowing snow, high winds, and black ice on all the roads in and out of town. Keep in mind weather-related road closures are frequent during these times of year. Summers, by contrast, are warm but not hot; early to midsummer is often rainy/stormy. Late summer and fall are typically very dry.
Laramie is a hugely popular destination for anglers, with plenty of fishing opportunities. Not only does the Laramie river offer trout fishing, but the immediate surrounding plains have several world-class trout lakes. Additionally, there are three fishable lakes in Curt Gowdy State Park to the east, and nearly a hundred fishable lakes in and around the Medicine Bow National Forest and Snowy Range Scenic Byway (in the mountains to the west). Hunting is hugely popular in the Snowy Range as well.
Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snowmobiling, outdoor photography, and various other recreational opportunities are also plentiful in the mountains all around our community. Curt Gowdy State Park is a highly recommended destination, as is the Snowy Range Ski Area.
Laramie is home to the state's only 4-year university, the University of Wyoming, and the highest-altitude stadium at the FBS level of college football. It's also home to branches of Laramie County Community College and WyoTech.
Laramie does have high-speed internet and cable options, as well as service from several cellphone providers. Service can be spotty just a short ways out of town, however.
Laramie has a very small regional airport; it also has two rental car companies: (Enterprise and Cowboy car rental). There are several truck stops in the area. Laramie is served by Greyhound buses; unfortunately, service can be spotty, especially during the winter, and the official stop routinely changes locations.
Mostly due to high cost and low demand, public transportation is limited and mostly administered by the University of Wyoming. This, of course, is where Snowy Range Taxi comes in. We're proud to call Laramie home and hope to continue serving the community for years to come!
